Rhetoric is Everywhere

Updated: Aug 12

Before taking my rhetoric theory class, I didn't know what rhetoric meant. But now, I realize it's everywhere-ads, videos, even how we comfort our friends.

Rhetoric is about how meaning is shaped, identities are formed, and emotions are stirred.

  • Did you know you're a rhetor?

Every word, emoji, pause, and platform-intentional or not-is saying something.

No need for a stage to perform.

  • Power in Metaphors

Something that stuck with me? How often we speak in metaphors without even realizing it. These phrases shape society, culture, and how we make sense of life.

Metaphors help us process feelings, hype ourselves up, or even make life feel manageable. Once I learned that, I started noticing how much power there is in the way we express ourselves.

Rhetoric in Music

Poetry + a beat = music, and it's full of rhetorical choices.

Artists use metaphors, repetition, and emotional appeal to tell their story and connect with us.

  • Think about Ariana Grande saying, "Just like magic," meaning her success, confidence, and manifesting power = literal magic

    - Magic: The vehicle in this metaphor can be defined as energy, belief, and divine feminine power.

It turns confidence into something supernatural.

  • Lana Del Rey saying, "You're so Art Deco," isn't just artsy-it's a metaphor for emotional distance wrapped in beauty.

    - Art Deco: A 1920s-30s design style that's elegant, geometric, and emotionally cold.

It's rhetorical vibe is a cold allure. Ethos through imagery and art-defining an entire vibe in two words.

Once you learn to spot it, you realize: everything is a message.

So stop and smell the roses with the next metaphor you hear-and ask yourself what it really means to you.

''Til next week, keep your healing-Pink!

    Love, Tati
