Think and Grow Rich

Burning Desire

Napoleon Hill's 1937 classic Think and Grow Rich is still relevant today for one reason: it reveals the secret of burning desire—the relentless force behind every great success.

What I love most is how Hill shares short, inspiring stories that ground us in our shared humanness and remind us that we are capable of anything—if we have a burning desire.

Hill explains that the “degree of emotion is what transforms a regular wish into a burning desire.

As he explains: "Burn the boats, laugh often, fix your mind on the goal—and your burning desire will soon become your reality."

One of Hill’s most powerful stories is about a man who quit just three feet from gold. He knew it was there—he had borrowed from his family, worked tirelessly, and believed in the dream. But when he came across obstacles and the digging got hard, he gave up, exhausted, and sold his equipment for almost nothing to a junkman.

The junkman brought in a professional, who confirmed the prospector had stopped just three feet short. With fresh determination, the junkman kept digging—and struck it rich.

Interpretation: Our burning desire is tested at the breaking point—and just beyond that point lies the gold.

So when will we reach this apex moment—the one where we finally decide to never again settle for mediocrity, and instead use burning desire as the vehicle to devote ourselves fully to greatness?

A beautiful reminder Hill gives us is: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."

Throughout the book, he repeats the idea of being "ready."

To Hill, being ready is the moment desire hardens into certainty. Once you are truly ready, there are no hesitations, no "maybes."

Readiness becomes synonymous with burning desire: the point where the goal becomes non-negotiable, where failure is no longer an option, and where obstacles shift from excuses into steps toward achievement.

Hill also writes, "Kindle anew in your mind the fire of hope, faith, courage, and tolerance" (p. 30).

Relight your fire. Keep faith. When life feels heavy, spark those beautiful qualities and let them guide your actions. Relight your fire as many times as you need, and let it grow stronger each time. Through this, you build the strength and resilience to align yourself with the success you seek.

This is the essence of manifestation: creating a vision we desire so passionately that you can't let it go. Visualizing it, writing it, thinking it, speaking it, daydreaming it, dreaming it—until it finally takes physical form in your reality.

So remember "Every adversity, every failure, every heartbreak, carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit." —Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich
